Spruceridge Haus
century-old farmhouse upgraded with sustainable, energy-efficient passive house design
The owner of this Century old Farmhouse is a conservationist and thus was interested in building using Passive House techniques for this large addition. Specialty Energy & Building Science Consultants, Architects, and Engineers all collaborated to integrate the energy conserving components with a unique, modern design. Hyper insulated structural slab w/ full height formed in place concrete walls provide a beautiful interior finish and act as a thermal regulator for the building. Strategically located triple glazed windows not only look great, but are placed in mind of solar trajectory at different times of the year. Heat pump, ERV and separate HWT comprise the buildings mechanical systems w/ the addition of a Scandinavian wood burning fireplace. Huge glazed on-site fibreglass window walls make up the corridor connection to the existing dwelling. Custom milled clear pine has been applied as a ceiling covering, which dramatically warms the space in contrast to the architectural concrete surfaces. Cedar details in the washroom along with microcement wall covering and European fixtures carry through the natural & minimalist theme. W Construction is big fan of Big Ass Fans (look them up!) and so is this client, evident in the selection for the 17ft Great Room ceiling.
